IT was by no means plain sailing, and things looked rocky at times – but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has successfully guided Manchester United back into next season’s Champions League.

While the Red Devils have their Europa League campaign to complete, Solskjaer and Co will have already started planning for their next assault on the Premier League – with a number of star additions being linked with Old Trafford.

But how did this year’s class get on individually?

Tom McDermott is on hand to run the rule over who starred and who underachieved in red this season.

David De Gea – 6

Mistakes have overshadowed some decent saves but in general, it’s been one of De Gea’s poorest periods at the club.

Is he in a slump that he can recover from, or are his best days behind him?

It’s a huge season on the horizon for the Spaniard.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 8

Like most of the squad, Wan-Bissaka looked tired towards the end of the campaign.

There’s also room for improvement in the attacking third, but overall, it’s been an excellent first season at the club.

Good pace and the ability to win the ball cleanly in one versus one situations means he’s a nightmare to play against if you are a wide forward.

Victor Lindelof – 6

The Swede is far from perfect but there’s been occasions where he’s looked more reliable than Maguire.

Lindelöf often drifts through games unnoticed, and it would be nice if he was more vocal and took control of defensive situations with more authority.

Harry Maguire – 6

The huge transfer fee is not Maguire’s fault but Solskjaer has increased the pressure on him by giving him the armband.

Positionally suspect, the England defender has made a number of errors since lockdown which have caused alarm.

Hopefully, after the break, and with a more mobile partner, he’ll return to his best form.

Axel Tuanzebe – 6

Would have scored higher but hasn’t played enough.

A frustrating campaign because he showed so many positive signs before injury.

Tuanzebe could be the long term answer next to Maguire and save the club millions of pounds but unless he gets himself fit and playing regularly, we’ll never fully know or see his potential blossom.

Fingers crossed for the future.

Luke Shaw – 7

Shaw enjoyed arguably his best season at Old Trafford

United missed Shaw since he hobbled off against Southampton with an ankle injury.

He played well not only at left back but as the third central defender next to Maguire and Lindelof.

In young Williams, Shaw now has healthy competition, but it seems to be bringing the best out of him, which is good for the squad.

Impressive debut season from the youngster who will push Shaw for a start at left back next season.

The local lad is gritty and loves a challenge, but he’s also shown signs of composure at the other end of the pitch, most notably at Sheffield United last November.

Nemanja Matic – 8

Matic’s experience has been vital at various points of the season.

His organisation in midfield has aided a defence that has required his protection, and he’ll be important to United in the Champions League next campaign.

Recently signed a new contract with the club.

Paul Pogba – 7

Returned to full fitness and form after lockdown, and in general did well.

There’s even been talk of a new contract, but fans won’t be completely happy until he adds more consistency to his game.

That said, United certainly look a better side with him in it.

Bruno Fernandes – 9

Fernandes' January arrival transformed United's season

Transformed United’s season since his arrival in January.

It’s not just his creativity and goals that have been a revelation either, because the Portuguese combines it with a work ethic many midfielders can’t match.

United wouldn’t have qualified for the Champions League without him.

Can he get better? We’re in for a treat if he can.

Fred – 7

Showed signs of improvement before the coronavirus took over with some fine displays, but has had to make do with a spot on the bench since Pogba’s return to fitness.

Matic may need some extra time to recover between games next campaign which could see Fred given the opportunity to re-establish himself in midfield.

Scott McTominay – 7

McTominay is the supporter out on the pitch.

Full of commitment and with a tireless work ethic, the Scot has emerged as a fan favourite.

For him to become a regular and jump ahead of Matic though, he will need to display more quality in possession.

Dan James – 6

Started well but has struggled slightly since Christmas.

James probably needs a break and a period of time watching from the stands to analyse not only his own game, but how other wingers perform during high intensity Premier League matches.

There’s a player in there though, and hopefully we’ll see the best of him as he matures over the next season or two.

Mason Greenwood – 9

Greenwood is the most exciting academy graduate since the class of ’92.

Left foot or right foot, he’s scored 10 Premier League goals from wide right and just wait until he’s playing through the middle!

Alan Shearer has already said that he could go on to become the greatest goal scorer the Premier League has seen.

Marcus Rashford – 8

It’s been Rashford’s most impressive season in the first-team when you look at his stats, but it could have been so much better if he had slightly more composure in and around the penalty area.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Rashford, if Jadon Sancho arrives.

Although Sancho plays on the other wing, Martial and Greenwood are more naturally gifted and clinical, which means Rashford might find himself on the bench if he doesn’t improve.

Anthony Martial – 9

With 17 Premier League goals and six assists, the Frenchman will push Fernandes all the way for the club’s Player of the Year award.

Martial has all the talent in the world and has played in his preferred position through the middle.

With a manager who supports and believes in him, if he can stay clear of injury, he should break the 20 Premier League goals barrier next season.

Jesse Lingard – 5

Lingard netted his first Premier League goal since December 2018 on the final day of the season

Lingard has had problems away from the pitch which have affected his form, but it feels like the natural time for him to move on and seek another challenge.

Unfairly, he’s often the first to be criticised on social media by supporters, but we shouldn’t forget his contribution over the years.

A poor season though will probably result in a move away from the club

Andreas Pereira – 5

The number of players ahead of Pereira in the queue for a starting position mean that he’s probably available for transfer this window.

It hasn’t quite worked for the Brazilian at United and I still struggle to think of where his best position is.

Like Lingard and Pereira, a move away from the club appears inevitable.

Hasn’t played enough but should look at Chris Smalling’s time at Roma as his inspiration. Still young enough to rebuild somewhere.
