The current academic year is almost coming to an end. Courses are over, exams are passed, and the results are announced. It’s time to work on your grades for next year! To give you a head start, I will show you how I created my university medical centre. Note that this tutorial works best if you have enough space around your university to fill it with modules of different types without building too close to other buildings or trees.
Don’t forget about the gradients in landscape paints, don’t just choose one color and paint everything! Add some variety by using two colors right next to each other that blend into one another gradually. For example, switching from green into yellow towards the bottom-right corner of your residential area makes the landscape look more realistic.
If you follow this tutorial, your medical center should look something like this:
The first step is to place a road running through your future medical centre Croydon and block up all the buildings except for the clinic and research lab. More buildings can be added later on as well (see picture below).
Note that I rotated and moved some of the modules around compared to my standard university layout (which will end up looking like your standard mall if you keep following this guide). Don’t worry about that right now. Just focus on getting enough space for what we want to do here; it’s easier than redesigning everything completely! : )
Next, create two high-density zones at both sides of the roads where your clinic and research lab are. I always chose the high-tech industry jobs here because these buildings produce a lot of traffic which is good for encouraging growth in your city.
Expand the roads, so the areas with high-tech industry jobs become accessible to vehicles. You could do this by creating one-way streets either on only one side, both sides, or even around your city if you chose to create an elevated highway instead of just straight streets. This step isn’t necessary, but it makes everything look cleaner, prevents heavy traffic jams, and increases land value (which means more tax money). Note that straight streets between residential areas will cause problems as well, though, as explained at the end of this tutorial.
Now it’s time to expand those zones with one or two more high-density jobs, so they form a nice large area. In the example below, I chose to add an additional high-tech industry zone on the right side, but you can add anything you want here. Just make sure that the resulting areas are big enough for your hospital and research lab buildings later on.
When everything looks good, it’s time to plop down your hospitals and research labs. Don’t forget to fill up all of those empty spaces with trees! Make sure that there is some space left in between them though because we will need some room for employees of these buildings as well as visitors which will increase traffic in the future.
